After careful consideration of the diverse and unpredictable gene pool in Easter and Olive Eggers, we’ve chosen to primarily offer point-of-lay pullets (female chickens under 12 months). As a result, we operate on a ‘what-you-see-is-what-you-get’ basis.
Please note that when we refer to ‘crosses’ or ‘hybrids,’ this generally applies to Easter Eggers and Olive Eggers, but it can also include Ameraucanas, Marans, Leghorns, Silverudd’s Blues, and Wyandottes that do not meet breed standards. These birds may exhibit discrepancies in eye, feather, or leg colour, or other traits that disqualify them from being classified within their respective breeds. As such, these birds are designated as pet-quality backyard chickens.
Given our limited stock, we primarily offer point-of-lay pet-quality pullets in collections that allow backyard chicken keepers to enjoy a variety of colourful eggs.
The Pullet Collection
We will curate special collections of six point-of-lay pullets based on the colours of the eggs they lay. For each collection, we’ll showcase photos of the pullets and their eggs. See the list of possible egg colour variants for the point-of-lay pullets collections.
New collections will be posted weekly, provided we have a sufficient variety of coloured eggs available. When a collection is posted, you may choose to purchase between 4 and 6 of these pullets to create your own colourful egg basket. If the egg colours in a given collection are not to your liking, you can simply wait for the next group that better suits your preferences.
These collections will be offered at a discounted rate:
Prices throughout 2024:
- 4 pullets for R900 (usually R1 000).
- 5 pullets for R1 100 (usually R1 250).
- 6 pullets for R1 200 (usually R1 500).
Prices from 1 February 2025:
- 4 pullets for R1 100 (usually R1 200).
- 5 pullets for R1 300 (usually R1 500).
- 6 pullets for R1 450 (usually R1 800).
The Pullet Collection will be shared on our WhatsApp group first. Please join our WhatsApp group. If any pullets remain after 24 hours, they will then be posted on other platforms. However, our Duo, Leftovers, Old Girls, and roosters are exclusively available through the WhatsApp group.
Additional Offerings Exclusively for WhatsApp Group Members
- The “Duo”: A smaller pullet collection of just two pullets. These may not be offered as frequently as the full collections but should be available every other week. – R500 for 2024 or R600 from 1 February 2025. (no bulk discount).
- The “Leftovers”: When only four pullets from a pullet collection are booked, the remaining two will be made available as a smaller group. Single leftover pullets will be carried over to the next group. The collection’s bulk discount applies to these Leftovers, as they were originally part of a larger group and may have less sought-after egg colours. – R450 for 2024 or R500 from 1 February 2025.
- The “Old Girls”: These are hens older than 12 months, up to three years old, which were part of our breeding programme but are no longer needed for breeding. They can be purchased individually or added to your pullet group. Unlike battery hens, which are often retired after 18 months to two years, backyard chickens remain productive for many years. These older hens are offered at a discounted price of R200 to R300 each depending on the quality of the individual.
- 2023 Hen Collection – Pet-quality hens that hatched in 2023, available in collections of 6. You may choose 4 to 6 hens from the collection:
- 4 hens for R800.
- 5 hens for R1 000.
- 6 hens for R1 100.
Roosters
- When added to a Pullet Collection, roosters are offered at a discounted rate of R150 each for 2024 or R200 each from 1 February 2025.
- When purchased individually or with a Duo, Leftovers, or Old Girls, the price is R200 each for 2024 or R250 each from 1 February 2025.
You may choose from the following roosters, subject to availability:
- An Easter Egger rooster carrying two copies of the blue egg gene (guaranteed 2 copies).
- An Easter Egger rooster carrying at least one copy of the blue egg gene (guaranteed 1 copy, with a chance of 2 copies).
- An Olive Egger rooster carrying at least one copy of the blue egg gene and dark brown egg genes.
- A rooster carrying only dark brown egg genes (no blue egg genes).
How to Book on the WhatsApp Group
When an offering is posted, it will include photos of the pullets and their eggs, along with all relevant details.
Please do not react to the post, as we use reactions to track availability.
- If the egg colours don’t appeal to you, feel free to pass on that group.
- If the egg colours match what you want, reply privately with the word “booked” from the image/post. It’s important to reply directly on the post since more than one collection might be posted at the same time.
We handle bookings privately to avoid any pressure or intimidation.
After booking, wait for confirmation.
The 🟠 reaction will be added to the group post to indicate that we’ve received a booking request.
If you’re contacted shortly thereafter, your booking was successful. If not, the pullets have been booked by someone else.
We will then confirm whether you want four, five, or six pullets, and whether you wish to add a rooster. Once confirmed, the post will be marked with a ❌ reaction.
If there are Leftovers, they will be posted at this point. If the collection becomes available again for any reason, the reaction will be updated to ✅, indicating availability.
Logistics
We are based in Muldersdrift, Gauteng, South Africa.
Most pet couriers do not transport chicks, so you will need to collect your chicks from us in Muldersdrift.
We can ship adult chickens via a pet courier that serves your area. We recommend Glorious Pets Logistics. All shipping costs are the buyer’s responsibility.
Chicks and adult chickens may be collected from us in Muldersdrift by appointment only.
Chick Prices
We are generally reluctant to offer chicks and do so only under exceptional circumstances. Any chick orders will be fulfilled on a waiting list basis during the breeding season, and will be limited exclusively to Easter and Olive Eggers. We cannot guarantee egg colour.
These are our 2025 prices for all chicken crosses/hybrids:
- R60 per chick under 1 week old.
- +R20 per additional week of age.
(For example, if you purchase a 2-week-old chick, the price will be R100: R60 for a day-old chick + R20 per week for 2 weeks.) - From 10 weeks, the price flatlines at R250 for unsexed chicks and roosters.
- R300 for pullets 10 weeks and over. (We will exchange a pullet for any chick that unexpectedly turns out to be a rooster.)
No Fertile Eggs
Due to the difficulty in guaranteeing fertility and the risks associated with shipping, we have discontinued the supply of fertile eggs. While we may occasionally ship eggs under special circumstances, this will be limited to Easter Egger and Olive Egger eggs. Please note that this is the exception, not the rule, and the buyer assumes all associated risks. The price is R30 per fertile egg. (We do not recommend purchasing fertile eggs due to the inherent risks, including possible mishandling during shipping.) For such special orders, we use The Courier Guy for deliveries within South Africa. We can consider ‘Pudo’ upon the buyer’s insistence, although we do not recommend it.
